Lions make friends easily

The Falls Church - Annandale Lions Club embraces
the Lions motto and philosophy - "We
Serve." Throughout its history,
the Clubs members have pitched in to support their mission of serving
the Falls Church and Annandale communities. This has meant giving their time, effort, and
resources to help the community. Although the prime focus of the Club is
to improve the eyesight and hearing of the community's needy, it also
supports youth activities, and local community, state, and international
charitable activities. Some of our more recent activities include:
- Vision and Hearing
Activities:
- Providing financial
assistance to the residents of the Annandale community who have
insufficient resources for their sight and hearing needs. This
includes eye exams, eyeglasses, cornea transplants, eye surgeries,
and hearing aids.
- Providing leader dogs and service dogs to
members of the Annandale community (we sponsored our first Leader
Dog in 1975)
- Operating and supporting the two Sight & Hearing
Screening Vans (providing free sight, hearing, and glaucoma
screening)
- Supporting the Recording Service for the Visually
Handicapped
- Supporting the Eyeglass Recycling Center.
- Youth Activities:
- Providing Christmas toys for needy
children
- Sponsoring local
schools in the Lions
International Peace Poster Contest
- Sponsoring the local
Lions of Virginia Bland Youth Music Contest. We have sponsored
the local Bland Contest since 1953, and we are delighted that
three of our contestants have gone on to win the Lions Statewide Bland
Competition (in addition to the many who have competed in the District
Bland Competition)
- Supporting the Lions Youth Camp
- Sponsoring representatives to Boys and Girls State activities and
co-sponsoring a Boy Scout Troop
- Sponsoring boys and girls sport team

Community Service and
Welfare: Supporting local
organizations such as Hospice, Alliance for Physically Disabled,
Salvation Army, Leukemia-Lymphoma
Society, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, and shelters;
supporting the humanitarian programs of the Annandale Christian
Community for Action (ACCA); providing special needs equipment to
the needy of the community (e.g., Braille and speak systems and
other special systems for use by the handicapped); and
participating in the Adopt-a-Highway (keeping it beautiful)
Program.

Supporting the Virginia Lions Eye Institute, the Mobile Sight &
Hearing Van, Stamps for
the Wounded Program, the Virginia Lions Hearing Foundation, the
District 24-L Hearing Aid Bank, the Old Dominion Eye Bank, the
Lions of Virginia Foundation, and the Lions Clubs International
Foundation.
